a5c7b9f00b Frank Horrigan is a Secret Service Agent. He currently does mostly undercover work. He goes to check on a report about a person who is threatening the life of the President. When he goes to the man's apartment, he finds clippings and photos of various assassinations throughout history. When he does a background check, he discovers that the man's identity is false. So he goes back to the apartment to get him, but when he goes in there, he finds the apartment cleaned out except for a photo of him when he was in Dallas, November 1963, protecting Kennedy. Later he gets a phone call from the man and tells him that he plans to kill the President and is daring Frank to stop him. When Frank reports to his superiors, he finds that there are some people like the agent in charge of protecting the President and the Chief of Staff, who think that Frank is letting his failure to protect Kennedy cloud his judgement. But as Frank chases him down, he discovers that he is not dealing with a nut but with a well organized individual.

When a lunatic assassin named Booth aka Mitch Leary begins to haunt and torment Frank with phone calls about his failure to save Kennedy and the threats to assassinate the president, Frank must take action and protect the presidents at all costs-even if it causes him humiliation. Does Frank have what it takes to take a bullet?
"In the Line of Fire" is a terrific movie. I'm so glad that Clint Eastwood decided to take a break from spaghetti westerns and did this movie. I love movies that have the hero and the villain playing cat and mouse games and this one takes the cake. Clint Eastwood was great as Frank Horrigan, a detective who is trying to stop a vicious assassin from killing the President of the United States. He looked very into shape for a man in his early sixties. John Malkovich plays Mitch Leary/John Booth/James Carney, the pychotic assassin that Eastwood is trying to stop. He was excellent in this role and I don't think he was over the top. His performance was very intense and he was downright scary at times. Rene Russo was ok but I really didn't care too much for her character. I loved the chase scenes and the phone conversations between Clint and John were intriguing. It was a little disheartening to see John kill everyone that he came into contact with but I think that if he hadn't then the movie wouldn't have been as good. The last scene in the movie was one of the best and I'm glad it ended the way that it did. This was a very good movie and I'm so glad I own it now. Well, thanks for reading my review! Bye!
A great action packed thriller film with great acting and direction from Wolfgang Petersen (Air Force One). Basically Secret Service Agent Frank Horrigan was a bodyguard for many years, and he was present at the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, but did not respond to the shots, and he was the closer bodyguard, this still haunts him. One day he receives a call from a crazed stalker and trained army assassin, calling himself Booth, and threatens to kill the president. Now Frank along with the department, including Secret Service Agent Lilly Raines (Rene Russo), oh, they have a little romance going on by the way, are trying to find this assassin, real name Mitch Leary (a great performance from John Malkovich). Frank is also doing his best to get back into being a bodyguard for the current President (Jim Curley). There are some great chases sequences, near catches and complications to ending the whole thing, including a great scene where Frank could kill Mitch, but fall to his death, and his partner Secret Service Agent Al D'Andrea (Miracle on 34th Street's Dylan McDermott) is killed as a result. The final scenes at a conference with the President is most gripping, seeing if Frank can make it and save the leader, and seeing if disguised Mitch can succeed in killing him with his own made gun. Also starring Gary Cole as Secret Service Presidential Detail Agent-In-Charge Bill Watts, John Mahoney as Secret Service Director Sam Campagna, Gregory Alan Williams as Secret Service Agent Matt Wilder and Saw's Tobin Bell as Mendoza. It was nominated the Oscars for Best Film Editing and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, and it was nominated the BAFTAs for Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay. John Malkovich was number 59, and Clint Eastwood number 18 on The 100 Greatest Movie Stars, Malkovich was number 53 on The 100 Greatest Sex Symbols, and Eastwood was number 61 on The 100 Greatest Pop Culture Icons. Very good!
It's not the deepest thematic concern you ever saw on screen. But it's watchable, great fun.
The old British BBFC 15 versions are all cut by approx. 8 seconds. Several death scenes were affected, e.g. the killing with a plastic bag, the breaking of necks and a shootout. All cuts were waived for the Blu-ray release. An empty pistol is considerably lighter than one with a clip loaded, an untrained civilian might not be able to tell the difference, but someone with proficient firearms training can. This is not an exact science, however, as it does not account for chambered rounds. Horrigan could tell by the weight that there was not a clip in the pistol. There could have still been one in the chamber, but his instincts suggested there was not, and in this instance, his instincts proved right. He also thumbs back the hammer allowing him to see there is no round in the chamber.
